Man dies and five-year-old child seriously injured after car ploughs into them on Crawley roundabout

A MAN has died and a five-year-old child riding a bike was seriously injured when a car crashed into them at a roundabout yesterday morning.

The collision happened at the Tushmore roundabout on Crawley Avenue, in Crawley, around 8.30am.

The red Fiat 500 car ploughed into the male pedestrian and child on the bicycle.

Police said the 49-year-old man died at the scene while the boy was taken to hospital with a broken leg. They weren't together.

The driver of the car, a 30-year-old local woman, was uninjured.

Sergeant Richard Hornsey said: "We are supporting the man's family as we begin our investigation.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have dash cam footage of the A23 Crawley Avenue between Ifield College and the collision site at the Tushmore Roundabout at around 8.30am, to please get in touch."

A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to assist with a road traffic collision at 8.30am on Thursday morning at the Tushmore Roundabout on the A23 in Crawley.

"Two engines were sent to the scene along with a heavy rescue vehicle.

"On arrival, crews assisted emergency services with making the scene safe, and the road was closed. We left at 10.12am."
